Bhopal gas tragedy
Bhopal gas tragedy
Night of 2 December caused havoc in the city of lakes Bhopal. yes, I am talking about the world's worst industrial disaster that occurred on on the night of 2–3 December 1984. Thinking about it after thirty-seven years of Bhopal gas tragedy it feels so heartbreaking.
Bhopal gas tragedy, was a gas leak incident at the Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL) pesticide plant in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India.
On that night, chemical methyl isocyanate (MIC) spilt out from Union Carbide pesticide factory turned the city of Bhopal into a colossal gas chamber. It was India's first major industrial disaster. At least 30 tonnes of methyl isocyanate gas killed more than 15,000 people and affected over 600,000 workers.
Some half a million survivors suffered respiratory problems, eye irritation or blindness, and other maladies resulting from exposure to the toxic gas; many were awarded compensation of a few hundred dollars.
The gas drifted over the densely populated neighborhoods around the plant, killing thousands of people immediately and creating a panic as tens of thousands of others attempted to flee the city.
37 years on, Bhopal Gas Tragedy Victims Still Await Adequate Compensation
The survivors and the kin of the deceased are still waiting to be compensated fairly with an organisation working for them claiming that each victim has so far received less than one-fifth of the allotted sum.
